Breedism in Florida Puts Buddy’s Life at Risk

It was a dog fight started by another dog, but the one that is fighting for life now is the target of human judgment simply because of its breed.

The animal control law in Florida connotes that if a pit bull comes under attack, it has no right to defend itself, as any individual—animal or human—under attack would do. Instead, the pit bull is supposed to either run away or just let itself be bitten, beaten, or hurt by the offender. If it bites in self-defense, it will be killed for proving itself ‘dangerous’.

This arbitrary and senseless law, worse than medieval in spirit, is taking the toll on the life of yet another innocent pit bull in Florida. Buddy, a pit bull in Orange Country, FL, is in a cage, waiting for his fate to be decided by a local court, after he tried to defend his owner – not himself but his owner – against the attack of a dog that had turned on Buddy a moment ago.

The problem started when Buddy’s owner, a young girl, took Buddy for a walk but lost hold of his leash, causing Buddy to run downstairs where he met two dogs—a  sheltie and a dachshund— that lunged at  Buddy who had playfully approached them. The two smaller dogs were let loose by their owner and both these canines attacked Buddy.

The pit bull kept its self-control and didn’t get into the fight imposed on him but then the girl, Buddy’s owner, arrived on the scene and nervously tried to push the sheltie away to end the fight. At this, the sheltie attacked the girl and the protective instinct of Buddy came into action. He turned on the sheltie and the owner of the smaller dog started beating Buddy, ignorant of the right way to separate dogs in a fight.

The fight ended when the sister of the girl, Buddy’s owner, came running down and grabbed Buddy from the hind legs, causing him to let go. The fight was reported to Animal Control whose staff came and recorded the statement of the sheltie’s owner. Both dogs were taken into their custody and held at the Orange County Animal Control. Not surprisingly, the sheltie was released to go home while Buddy was held for a trial on whether or not to let him live. Reason is manifest as daylight: Buddy is a pit bull!

So it doesn’t matter what the actual situation that led to a dog’s arrest; if a dog is a pit bull, it is doomed to go under a trial for the senseless assumption that his breed is dangerous, and so he is the one who has to pay for whatever loss happens. But even if there has been no loss, capturing a pit bull and taking it to the animal control for execution trial is nothing new in the US and some other countries with breedist laws.

Buddy is to be tried on February 29 at the local court that will decide whether or not he should live. Eye witnesses know he is innocent and his supporters on his Facebook page are convinced that he is a victim of breedism. The Lexus Project is also working on Buddy’s case and to pay for his trial, a donation page has been set up where those caring for Buddy’s life can donate online.

The question however is how long this breedist nightmare will continue; is it not time to learn from Ohio that has abolished breedism?
