Bosch Hammers: More Power + Less Vibration = Increased Jobsite Productivity

Bosch Power Tools Product Manager Mitch Burdick describes the process of improving existing tools at his company as a “ground-up” methodology of listening to existing customers for guidance on what future technology and tools need to deliver. Bosch’s latest innovations in hammers reflect the company’s philosophy of creating tools that improve productivity and maintain comfort.

DH712VC_M11A7488 tinyAccording to Burdick, all users want hammers with more impact energy, because that translates into increased productivity.

“No one wants a heavier tool. The trick is to design new hammers that dramatically improve performance with little or no weight gain.”

That meant Bosch couldn’t take the approach of other manufacturers and simply add anti-vibration features to their existing hammer line — that would, by definition, add weight.

Bosch engineers decided that the key to improving anti-vibration technology was through a ground-up redesign.

Amazingly, a breakthrough innovation by Bosch engineers actually led to a more powerful tool that was easier on the operator and added almost no additional weight; the answer, according to Burdick, was air itself.

“We integrated vibration reduction right into the hammer mechanism, increasing the air cushion in the hammer pipe,” said Burdick. “We were able to take a significant amount of vibration out of the tool and the longer chamber allowed us to actually increase the impact energy of the tool.”

The solution improves performance and comfort and along with additional, visible dampening elements on the main handle, the new hammers change the user experience so drastically, Burdick said, it takes new operators by surprise — they can’t believe what they’re feeling (or not feeling).

“The first reaction from many users is that it’s not hitting hard enough,” commented Burdick. We generally tell them, use it for a day, and see how much more you get done — and how much less beat up you are at the end of the day.”

Burdick said decreasing operator fatigue is — like making durable, more powerful hammers — another way Bosch is helping contractors increase their productivity.

“One of our taglines is, ‘impact the job, not the body,'” said Burdick. “Everything we do is about making the contractor’s life easier at the jobsite.”
