Highlighted Action Items from the February 5, 2013 St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners Regular Meeting:

Proclamations The Board proclaimed February 2013 as A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway Month. The Board proclaimed St_Johns_CountyFebruary 5, 2013 as Former County Commission Chairman Harry Waldron Day.

Special Item – Pink Heals Movement Fire Truck Presentation

As one of the newest members of the Pink Heals Program, the St. Johns County chapter conducted a special debut showing of “Ashley,” their pink fire truck. Since 2007, the Pink Heals organization has served to bring awareness and assistance to victims of breast cancer through a program focused on delivering help to those who need it the most. The Pink Heals organization is committed to ensuring 100% of donations made to local chapters remain in their respective communities. (photos available upon request)

Special Item – 4-H Youth Quilters Art Show

A special reception marked the display of the 4H Youth Quilters handcrafted quilts. Through the generous efforts of 4-H volunteers and the St. Augustine Piece Makers Guild, St. Johns County 4-H youth have practiced the “Learn by Doing” motto of 4-H as they designed and crafted unique quilted wall hangings.

Regular Agenda Item One – Report by A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway Committee

Sallie O’Hara, Friends of A1A Byway Program Administrator, delivered an informational report on the accomplishments of the A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway Committee. In June, 2012 the A1A Byway celebrated 10 years as a designated National Scenic Byway. Numerous projects, programs and awards have been garnered over that period. Ms. O’Hara’s presentation covered past and future plans for enhancing economic development and quality of life.

Regular Agenda Item Three – Presentation by Tobacco Free St. Johns

Mary Ann Steinberg, Tobacco Prevention Specialist for Tobacco Free St. Johns, and student members of SWAT, Students Working Against Tobacco, delivered a presentation to the Board concerning candy flavored tobacco as a harmful product targeted at youth. SWAT requested a potential ordinance that would restrict the sale and/or distribution of flavored tobacco and nicotine products in St. Johns County. The Board approved a motion to allow the County Attorney to research the issue and possibly draft an ordinance to be considered at a future Commission meeting.

Regular Agenda Item Six – Appointment to the Northeast Florida Regional Council

The Board approved the appointment of City of St. Augustine Commissioner Roxanne Horvath to the Northeast Florida Regional Council.
