AHCFActively Helping Children and Families

A Volunteer Opportunity That is Perfect for Everyone!

The AHCF is the ‘voice’ for truly incredible children and their families, and I wanted to speak today, about how YOU can get involved with this incredible organization.  I know there is a great deal of negativity and suffering in the world, and people have become so depressed that they are finding it hard to discover hope, and the light at the end of many of their tunnels.  Then, something comes into your world like the AHCF, and everything begins to change.  Because here is a truly amazing group of people who are giving their hearts, passion, caring thoughts, hard work, donations, and/or time to a truly wonderful community that has all gotten together to create a “bright spot” in our futures and the futures of children suffering from Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood.

We’ve spoken about this for months, and the response has been huge.  AHC is a rare neurological disorder in which children experience bouts of temporary paralysis affecting one or more parts of their body.  AHC causes “episodes” that can last for minutes, hours…even days, and are sometimes very painful; and AHC also severely affects a child’s ability to learn.  Many AHC sufferers also have epilepsy.  This is simply not right, and needs to be cured and cured now.  Every child deserves an unfettered future filled with dreams, hopes, and success.  And the AHCF is making huge strides in putting this disease behind us.  Not only are they doing incredible work but, let’s face it, they are offering a chance for others to get involved and make a difference.  Whatever you “put out” into the atmosphere comes back ten-fold, and you will not only have your caring returned to you, but you will also find that helping this magnificent organization and these wonderful children brings light into your own lives.

AHCF is seeking people who are aware of AHC and who would be willing to be active participants in helping the Foundation move forward in achieving their goals.  These goals are huge – but with help – they can be reached!  The AHCF is working tirelessly on finding treatments and ultimately a cure for AHC while helping families and spreading awareness.  To gain different perspectives, ACHF would consider family members of an AHC child and also those interested friends or colleagues that you think would be a good fit.

This is a very exciting time for the Foundation and much needs to be done.  Besides voting on the frequent issues before the Board, Board members are expected to lead by example and participate with their special talents wherever they can.  This organization is running miles in a single day.  Working on the website, updating the family database, creating a database of donors, reviewing marketing proposals, planning for family meetings, symposiums, and other events, developing materials – both paper and electronic for fundraising and awareness, and zillions of other projects that will grow the Foundation.  If any of you out there would be willing to commit some time and ideas, AHCF would love to put your name in nomination for a voice in the Foundation.

But it is not only Board members that AHCF seeks.  Committee help is also needed!  At the beginning of AHCF’s existence, it was difficult to bring people on board because, at the onset, there was still so much “up in the air” regarding structure or any avenues to implement all the wonderful ideas that were offered by some supremely wonderful people. Now, of course, with everyone’s help and support, the Foundation is on track and exploding with ideas.  They are exploring numerous avenues to fulfill their mission statement. AHCF’s Board is filled with strong, determined people and they have developed committees to tackle all of the pressing issues of AHC, as well as investigating various ways to spread awareness, increase research, and support families.  If you consider joining a committee, you will not only make a positive impact in people’s lives, but you will become part of a dedicated team that is working diligently to cure AHC, and give all our children a better existence and a fantastic future.

Family support is ALWAYS necessary and very gratifying.  If your interest lies in healing families and creating ideas to help families connect, develop introductory and welcoming materials for new families, research physical, social and developmental resources that would truly help kids and parents, YOU are needed!!

AHCF is also working to compile a list of federal and state-by-state resources, and a really much needed registry of all of the AHC knowledgeable Physicians/Neurologists in the United States.  YOUR ideas, YOUR creativity, YOUR NECESSARY!

From the world of public reactions to the world of family support, ACHF wants you to become a part of their truly amazing team.  Think of this as your own regiment – going into battle to save our children once and for all.  Education is also a huge key to finding the cure for AHC.  Physicians/neurologists, teachers and caregivers, our legislature, everything and everyone is needed to spread the word about AHCF, and get people to “see” that this is a truly amazing time in the lives of these children; with the work of AHCF, these children are finally being “seen” and listened to and…helped.

There are SO many creative people out there in the world, and the computer realm is beyond huge.  So many of you have the design talent and ability to help AHCF create informational materials, as well as putting together articles (JOIN ME) for AHCF’s Newsletter and awareness campaigns.

And, Fundraising?  Is there anything more important right now to make sure that AHC is truly a disease of the past?  Finding treatments and a cure for AHC needs to happen now!  There are so many people out there who work from home, or have free time that they could devote to AHCF and find donors, spread the word, and be a part of giving our children their lives back!  You can even put together events in your own backyard!

AND EVERYONE – no matter who you are, where you live, how much you work – everyone has the time to point and click.  Even I know that.  One second out of your day can make such a huge difference you would NOT believe it.  I will CONTINUE to talk about this because it is, literally, once second out of each day.

The “Vivint Gives Back Contest” is still in the forefront of my mind and should be in the forefront of yours!  Millions of you have come out to vote, but MORE people are needed!  Every single day YOU can vote in the “Vivint Gives Back Contest” to enable the AHCF to win $250,000.00 to further research into AHC, develop treatments and trial medications, teach the public and professionals about AHC, and find that cure!

One second to simply go to  http://www.vivint.com/givesbackproject/charity/57 and vote for AHCF to win that $250,000.00 grant to continue their work!  One second, once a day, YOU can visit this site and vote to help the Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood Foundation receive a part of $1.25 million dollars that Vivint is awarding to local charities.  The “Vivint Gives Back Project” is a program run by Vivint, Inc, which allows Facebook users to help Vivint support charities that are doing outstanding work in neighborhoods and communities across the United States.

Being a volunteer is unbelievably rewarding.  And THIS is the organization that will make your heart soar.  Can you imagine being one of the volunteers on the day that – SOON will come – when you receive a message that says AHC has been CURED!

There Are Superheroes Among Us

There Are Superheroes Among Us by Amy Lignor   This story truly proves that a superhero does not require a cape, tights, or the ability to fly. In a world where all headlines seem to be centered around who shot who, who is being put upon, who’s “getting away with it” – all the way to who is getting divorced and who may or may not be kneeling at NFL games – negative stories seem to be the only ones covered anymore by the media. … [Read More its Good for You...]

Vacation Time Has Turned “Spooky”

Vacation Time Has Turned “Spooky” by Amy Lignor   Myths and legends, both spooky and surreal, are becoming the subject of many books and newspaper articles lately. And the location of many, oddly enough, happen to be in the Southwest. It used to be that a nice white sandy beach was the one place we yearned to go on vacation to get away from it all. Now, however, people are searching for places to travel where legends still exist, and … [Read More its Good for You...]
