5 of the Most Important Non-Profit Health Organizations

Non-profit organizations can refer to homeless shelters, charitable organizations and also health organizations. If you are interested in learning more about some of the most important and beneficial non-profit health organizations around the world, then be sure to keep reading.

1. American Diabetes Association

Diabetes is a debilitating condition that can make everyday like tasks like eating and drinking a complicated process. Unfortunately, more than eight percent of Americans, or 26 million people, have diabetes currently. As that number only continues to grow, the American Diabetes Association is taking great strides to educate citizens about how to prevent diabetes, how to choose healthy foods, how to eat nutritious meals even after being diagnosed with the disease and how to treat diabetes in an affordable and simple way. A large campaign from the American Diabetes Association also works hard to teach children about nutrition in an effort to prevent the next generation from contracting diabetes at a young age.

2. American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society is one of the best known nonprofit health organizations in the United States. Its goals are to improve the life of those already diagnosed with cancer, to encourage medical treatment and physicals in order to have early diagnoses when cancer is present and to fundraise money in order to research and study potential cures for cancers. Billed as the official sponsor of birthdays, the American Cancer Society promotes a number of large events like Relay for Life that raise awareness for Lupus, Leukemia and breast cancer, among many other types of cancer.

3. Arthritis Foundation

Arthritis is a chronic disease that can affect young and old people alike, inflaming the joints and causing pain during movement. The Arthritis Foundation is a large nonprofit health organization that helps to raise awareness about arthritis, raises money for research and organizes large events to raise money for arthritis sufferers.

4. American Foundation for Disabled Children

This nonprofit health organization was started in 1991 as a way to address the needs, both physical and social, of disabled children in the United States. Over time, the charitable organization has grown to provide medical assistance, psychological services and social activities for children with disabilities as well as for their parents.

5. AIDS Research Alliance

The AIDS Research Alliance is a medical nonprofit organization that helps to prevent the spread of AIDS, helps to improve the medical treatments available for patients who have already contracted the virus and seeks to educate the public about safe sex practices. Says LeVar Burton, “AIDS Research Alliance has helped made HIV/AIDS treatable…,” and that is precisely what the organization aims to do.

Each of these nonprofit health organizations helps to make the world a better place. If you are interested in volunteering for or working with a nonprofit health organization, be sure to seek out one of the five listed above.
