Should Wild Animals be Kept in Captivity? on Apr1 2010

The heartbreaking demise of the SeaWorld whale trainer, Dawn Brancheau, who was killed by one of the killer whales she used to work with, has started a debate on the issue of whether or not it is a good idea to keep these wild animals in captivity. Few days after this recent tragedy the park authorities announced that they are planning to restart the killer whale shows. The officials initially dismissed the suggestions of releasing Tilly, the killer whale that killed Brancheau by grabbing her ponytail and drowning her under the water. But the authorities are now giving it a thought whether to keep the killer whale or release it in the light of the sad incident.

People have started taking animals for granted and they no more pay attention to the fact that animals can act in their own instinctual way and have the potential to become harmful. In our efforts to conserve environment and species we are forgetting the fact that some of these wild animals like orcas can become a threat to the existence of those who care for them and hence it is better that we do not underestimate the dangers when dealing with these kinds of wild animals.

While the SeaWorld’s killer whale shows have started again, Tilly is no more the part of these shows. The trainers have also been seen taking additional precautionary measures which is not only good for their own security but also for the wild orcas. It is perhaps also important that people do not become negligent of the health and safety requirements of these animals. It is better to take care of the health of your pets and the other animals that provide us entertainment and companionship in our routine lives. Tablets like Sentinel can be of great help in prevention of some of the fatal diseases in your pets.
