Employee Dies as Disney World’s Monorails Collide on Jul6 2009

“It’s a bit shocking,” said a 22-year-old tourist from London. “Disney seems so perfect.”

A Disney employee was killed on Sunday as two monorails in the Magic Kingdom collided.  The victim, 21-year-old Austin Wuennenberg, was the conductor of one of the trains.  One of Wuennenberg’s friends and former Stetson University classmate, Brandon Ross, said that “He seemed to be a pretty safe person,” referring to Wuennenberg’s pattern of arriving at the park a day early so as not to be drowsy as a conductor.  “He’s not reckless at all.”

This was the first fatal accident in the 38-year history of the monorail’s operation.  Five park guests on the monorail were treated for minor injuries.

“They are extremely rare,” Disney’s Senior Spokesperson, Michael Griffin, said of accidents at the park. “The safety of our guests and cast are a top priority above all else.”
