You know that empty bulding at 149 King St. where the Cooper Tires store used to be? Henry Whetstone, Jr. is attempting to purchase the space for the new Whetstone candy factory.
Whetstone is applying for a “use by exception” from the city, meaning “a use that would not be appropriate generally through the zoning district, but which if controlled as to the number, area, location or relation to the neighborhood, would promote the public health, safety, morals, order, comfort, convenience, appearance, prosperity or general welfare (St. Augustine City Code).”
The city’s Planning Department claimed “that the Planning & Zoning Board can approve [such a request].” The only bump in the road is for the building to meet the federal flood height of a sealed 10 feet.
The Board will meet at 2 PM on July 7 in the Alcazar Room at City Hall to discuss the issue.
