What Republicans Need to Do

ORMOND BEACH, FL – When Michael Steele got elected to Chair of the Republican National Committee I thought…good!  After a long hiatus because of the national party support of people like Arlan Specter, I was interested in making a positive contribution.  So I went to http://www.gop.com/2008Platform/ to take a look and see what the platform states.  If you are a Democrat out there, I encourage you to go to their platform and see what’s in that.  I’d bet you would be surprised relative to the current collection that represents you in Washington now.

Anyway, I found some deficiencies in the Republican platform so I wrote a letter to the new Chairman, Mr. Steele, as follows:

“Mr. Steele:

As a long-time Republican and former active member of the Republican Party of Florida, I was totally disillusioned with the nomination and election of Charlie Crist as governor here.  Look what’s happened to Florida since a lawyer took over.  The nomination of John McCain was my second disappointment and of course he lost – paying the price for “compromise” of principals.  So you know why my name is off the scope up there.  I just flipped through the GOP Platform and here are suggestions:

Recommended changes:

-Adopt the Fair Tax.  Stop screwing around with the current tax code.

-Mandate Internet voting.  Goes to ensuring one voter, one vote.

-Mandate loser pays in civil suits.  Get the lawyers out of so much of the economy.

-Rewrite chapter on protecting the environment to include consideration of real science about climate change.

-Get Federal government out of the way on health care.  Medicare and Medicaid are broken and I don’t think they can be fixed.

-Get Federal government out of the way on education.  This is a local matter and should stay that way.

-Get Federal government out of the way on gambling.  Where did that come from?

-Strengthen stand against abortion.  Good but needs beef.

Recommended procedures:

-Mandate that all candidates read and sign off on a pledge to support the entire platform.  If the principles are good then we should demand that they be part of the heart and soul of every campaign, including city commissioner, mayor, assemblyman, and ALL politicians.

If you really mean you want a party that stands on principle, then you have to get real and insist on the core principals.  If you want me to be a part of it, you’ve got to get real.”

I would challenge everyone to take a look at this platform and see if I missed anything.  You may have noticed that the spirit and content of this note fell on deaf ears.  Mr. Steele is NOT looking like a strong Chairman now.  Is the Republican Party proud of what they have done?  Will Republicans really be “in the wilderness” until Rush Limbaugh decides to run for President?
