Dollar Bill’s Corner: Catalina and Harry’s

February 16, 2009 – Harry’s restaurant was a home owned by Catalina’s father during the first Spanish Period in St. Augustine.  When she was ten-years-old they moved to the interior of Cuba.  She eventually married, but she always missed the view, the ships, and the harbor of beloved St. Augustine.  Her father dies and left her the house but she had to  go through the Spanish government and a lot of “red tape” to regain her beloved house and home during the second Spanish Period.  She finally moved into her home but died in her bedroom after she moved in.  That room is now the upstairs women’s bathroom at Harry’s.

Skip a couple hundred years to the present day.

A young lady was celebrating her 21st birthday at Harry’s Restaurant one evening when she started to bad-mouth not only the food, drinks, and the restaurant but St. Augustine in general.  After some time, the young “lady” went to the ladies’ room.

She never came back.

After looking al around the areas she was finally found – staring at the boats on the waterfront.  When asked what she was doing out there she said she was in the bathroom (remember – Catalina’s bedroom) when she was slapped.  Hard!  Everyone said they would find him and teach him a lesson but she said, “You don’t understand.  I got slapped, but I was completely alone in there!”  No one else came or went from the ladies’ room!”

Did she or didn’t she?  To this day only Catalina knows the truth.
